White sesame from Chad — the African oilseed

Sesamum indicum L. is one of the oldest oilseed crops cultivated by humans. Chad enjoys ideal climatic conditions for it — constant heat, well-drained soils, and natural drought resistance. Chadian white seeds are regarded as top quality on the international market.

With an oil content of 50 to 55% and a protein content of 20 to 25%, sesame is one of the richest oilseeds. Its oil is particularly stable thanks to its high content of natural antioxidants — sesamin, sesamolin and sesamol — which give it excellent resistance to oxidative rancidity. The dominant fatty acids are oleic acid (omega-9) and linoleic acid (omega-6).

Unhulled seeds keep their seed coat — an exceptional calcium content of 975 mg/100g and 11.2% dietary fibre. Hulled seeds (white, smooth) have a milder taste and more accessible oil content — the standard for tahini, halva and baking.
