Chébé — Chad’s age-old haircare treasure
Croton zambesicus Müll.Arg. (synonym Croton gratissimus), known as Chébé in Chad — a word of Fula origin meaning “to braid” — is a shrub of the Euphorbiaceae family. The powder is obtained by drying and then grinding the seeds. Unroasted, it is pale beige and practically odourless. Roasted using the traditional method, it takes on a dark-brown hue and develops a characteristic smell.
Chébé is remarkably rich in phytochemical compounds — more than 55 have been scientifically identified, including terpenoids, alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, cardenolides and carotenoids. The powder is insoluble in water — it is used mixed with an oily phase (oil, plant butter) to be incorporated into haircare cosmetic formulations.
Used for generations by the Bassara women of Chad — renowned for the exceptional length and density of their hair — Chébé powder is today a strategic cosmetic ingredient for natural haircare brands targeting coily, curly and wavy hair. TchadAgriSourcing offers pure Chébé powder, sourced and prepared directly in Chad. COA provided.
